“Knowing that ISO 9001:2015 isn’t supposed to have a final release until fall of this year, I expected the “Preparing for a Successful Transition” webinar to be filled with expectational fluff. I was pleasantly surprised to actually learn a number of different things that will be of some use to me while maintaining my company’s QMS.
The presentation was well laid out and the presenter reflected a sound knowledge of the topic. I have viewed several PJR webinars and I haven’t been disappointed yet. Even considering they are “free”, I have felt cheated by paying for other webinars that fell way short of expectations. Keep up the good work!”

ISO 14001 Industry Mandates
PJR – Your Partner in ISO 14001 Registrations
This document has been prepared to bring into view the global push for ISO 14001 certification and answer questions about PJR’s ISO 14000 Program.
What expectations and requirements have industry leaders such as Chrysler, Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota and Xerox issued for their suppliers?
All of these companies are either requiring or strongly encouraging their suppliers to become registered to the ISO 14001 standard. Most of these OEM deadlines have already arrived.
For example:
- Effective December 31, 2001, Ford mandated all production and non-production suppliers with manufacturing facilities to certify a minimum of one manufacturing site to ISO 14001. Ford required all supplier manufacturing sites to be certified by July 1, 2003.
- As of December 31, 2002, GM required all supplier facilities to be ISO 14001 certified.
- Chrysler required Tier 1 suppliers to certify an EMS as of January 31, 2003.
- Honda of America requested that suppliers attain registration by 2001.
- Toyota requires its suppliers to certify an EMS by December 31, 2003.
- Xerox expects suppliers to have an Environmental Management System in place and to be working toward ISO 14001 certification.
What is unique about the PJR ISO 14001 EMS program?
The PJR EMS program is accredited by ANAB (formerly RAB) of the United States, JAB of Japan, UKAS of Great Britain and the RvA of the Netherlands — the most widely recognized body of approval. As a result, PJR is frequently audited in the same fashion as we would audit a client. This scrutiny allows us to be on the cutting edge for audit process requirements.
Features of our program are as follows:
- Auditor Competency: The matching up of auditor competencies to clients is crucial. At PJR we only select auditors who meet both the qualifications of ISO 19011:2002 and whose “rating” on audit performance/experience in environmental aspects and impact is strong. This ensures the highest auditor competency for each aspect or impact significant to your industry.
- Audit Traceability: Traceability from audit to audit is necessary to ensure a thorough and efficient assessment. While adhering to our confidentiality agreement, PJR provides the details of previous audits to any new, current auditors. This gives each auditor the most up-to-date knowledge on a client’s aspects and impacts and confirms that each auditor knows which parts of the EMS were looked at previously. This will also allow each auditor to know which, if any, client aspects or impacts have changed. Of course, PJR continues to use the same Lead EMS Auditor for any given client’s location, whenever possible.
- Value Added Audit: The bottom line is that most companies get an ISO 14001 certificate; however, that is not the issue. The issue is “Are you getting what you paid for?” All of our EMS auditors are there to help make your EMS a better one and save on costs. PJR ensures that all auditors are user friendly and requires that every audit be value added. This means the auditor is there to help you.
How can PJR save us money on an audit as compared to other registrars?
PJR can save you money in several ways. PJR’s large auditor base has auditors qualified to perform ISO 14000, ISO 9000, ISO/TS 16949 and AS9100 audits. Cost-saving synergies result from split auditing, saving significantly on both time and money. Additionally, with offices located around the globe, PJR offers audits in six languages, significantly reducing the need for interpreters.
Who can I contact to learn more about the EMS process?
A PJR Account Executive or the ISO 14000 Program Manager may be reached at (248) 358-3388.

TL 9000
TL 9000
PJR now offers VIRTUAL Pre-assessments!
TL 9000 is the ISO 9000 based standard that was developed specifically for the telecommunications industry. TL 9000 was developed by an industry consortium called the QuEST forum, which consists of representatives from leading telecommunications service providers in the United States, Canada, and Britain. TL 9000 incorporates all of the elements of ISO 9001:2015, then adds requirements specific to the hardware, software and services segments within telecommunications. A further element of TL 9000 is the inclusion of “metrics,” a quantitative method of measuring cost and performance.
PJR was involved in the TL 9000 initiative from the beginning, being one of a select few registrars who participated in the formation of this important new standard by becoming a QuEST Forum Liaison Member. Being a Liaison Member allows PJR access to the most up-to-date information on TL 9000, which translates into the best service for PJR clients.
PJR is accredited by ANAB to register clients to TL 9000.

R2v3 Certification
Reuse & Recycling — Why Consider R2v3?
Have you thought about what happens to your old cell phone, television set, or computer after you have thrown it away or donated it to a vendor that collects materials for free? If you are the management representative for an electronics manufacturer, research laboratory, or waste management/recycling business, have you thought about the effects that electronics might have on the environment if they are disposed of improperly?
The United States dumps between 300-400 million electronic items per year – and they all have to go somewhere. Many are sent to landfills or exported to countries such as India or Nigeria with the expectation of being recycled. However, an unfortunate percentage is processed improperly and left to pose a hazard to local people and environments. Globally, this enormous e-waste problem has a potentially disastrous future, especially as computer and cell phone use continues to grow throughout the world. There also continue to be reported instances of data security breaches or mishandling of personal information. Technical knowledge and robust sanitization protocols are required in order to thoroughly and effectively prevent the accessing or recovery of personal data.
As consumers and corporations become increasingly conscious and concerned about recycling, protecting the environment, and data security, an industry standard for addressing the challenges of electronics recycling is crucial. The Reuse & Recycling (R2v3) Standard, now in its third version, was developed by a group of recycling stakeholders and industry experts. A set of voluntary principles and guidelines designed to promote and assess responsible practices for electronics recyclers, R2v3 requires implementing a management system which is accountable for practices affecting worker health and safety, data security, the environment, and the downstream management of end-of-life electronic material and equipment, both domestically and internationally. It encompasses rather than replaces the legal obligations of electronics recyclers. The standard prioritizes reuse over recovery or disposal processes in a global effort to minimize electronic waste streams, and promotes standardized testing and grading protocols for consistency across the industry.
As a change from the previous version of R2, R2v3 increases emphasis on protecting consumer data through stronger security controls, strengthens requirements to protect materials flowing through downstream vendors, and clarifies requirements and expectations. R2v3 recognizes that there can be more than one effective way to achieve a successful result and thus focuses on outcomes rather than prescribing a specific procedure.
Key benefits of R2v3 certification and implementation include:
- Promotes safe and effective reuse and recovery of electronic equipment and components
- Emphasizes data security and the appropriate management of personal data
- Provides a template for standardized labelling, testing protocols, and grading of both functionality and cosmetic condition of used electronics with reuse potential or a verified resale market
- Accountability and downstream control of the recycling chain
- Minimized environmental and public health risks
- Demonstrates compliance with domestic and international laws
- Minimizes liability and encourages reduced insurance costs for recyclers
- Assists original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s) with due diligence for their end-of-life electronics
- Instills public confidence through certified third-party review
R2v3 is not only advantageous for people, but also for the environment. To learn more about how R2v3 certification can help streamline your processes and enhance your reputation, reach out to PJR today!

Process Performance Auditing (PPA)
Perry Johnson Registrars’ Process Performance Auditing (PPA) approach is more than a checklist of requirements. PJR auditors receive continuing professional development training in this approach in order to link your customer’s objectives with your process performance measurables. The focus on your organization’s need to meet or exceed customer expectations is why PJR should be your Registrar. PJR auditors strive for value in every audit by thoroughly understanding your customer’s needs, and how your organization’s management system works to ensure customer focus and meeting those needs.
Just as ISO 9001:2000 was revised to place less emphasis on documented procedures, PJR auditors understand that their emphasis should be on auditing value-added processes, not just documents.
As organization processes are designed to add value to product, PJR auditors add value by identifying areas for corrective action and continual improvement through Process Performance Auditing.
Credibility is Our Reputation
PJR is fully accredited and in good standing with all of the agencies whose seals are shown on our accreditations page. The fact that PJR has achieved and maintained certification from all of these accrediting bodies means that our practices have satisfied the strict definition of quality established by the most exacting experts in the quality field. There is no better guarantee of quality to offer to our clients.
Service is Our Strength
At PJR, our goal is to provide the highest quality of service at the most affordable price. In many cases we are able to save our clients the cost of travel expenses by having auditors located close to clients’ sites. Our diversified geographical base and our rapid growth means that each year we can do this better than the year before. Our auditing staff, a mix of full-time and subcontracted auditors, gives us the best of both worlds. Full-time auditors help to provide consistency in auditing practices, while the subcontract auditor pool increases PJR’s breadth of industry experience and client proximity, helping clients to save on travel expenses.
PJR’s Customer Service Department is a further measure of our strong commitment to service. Our Service Representatives are available to answer questions, troubleshoot problems, send informational updates, and generally serve as a quick point of contact between our customers and various departments within PJR.
